Certain types of medications can cause limb loss or other amputations. The diabetes drug Invokana, for instance, has been linked to an increased incidence of leg and foot amputations.

On May 18, 2016, the FDA issued a statement that clinical trials show:

  • an increased risk of leg and foot amputations in users of Invokana
  • that users’ toes were most often affected, and
  • that Invokana users were twice as likely as non-users to require amputations
