Feldman & Pinto’s Philadelphia drug injury lawyers are evaluating Arava drug injury cases from people who suffered injuries from Arava side effects.

Arava is a drug made by Aventis Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Since the FDA approved the drug in 1998, doctors have prescribed Arava to over two million patients.

Arava use has been linked to serious injuries, including:

  • severe liver damage and toxicity
  • lymphomas
  • other hematologic, gastrointestinal, and skin reactions
  • hypertension
  • Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (a life threatening autoimmune disease)

U.S. sales of Arava began in 1998. According to Public Citizen, from 1998 to 2001, Arava was associated with 130 severe hepatic reactions and 22 deaths. By 2001, the European Medications Evaluation Agency was reporting severe liver reactions to Arava.

In July 2001, the FDA required the addition of information regarding severe liver damage to Arava’s warnings. Public Citizen petitioned the FDA for removal of Arava from the market in 2002, based on users’ dangerous reactions and the fact that safer drugs are available for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Arava users are at least 33 times more likely to die from using Arava than patients who use methotrexate instead of Arava.

Arava drug injury lawsuits filed against the drug maker allege that the company:

  • knew that Arava increased the risk of severe liver damage and other serious injuries, and
  • failed to give adequate warnings of these risks to doctors and consumers

Arava drug injury lawsuits seek damages from Aventis Pharmaceuticals for injuries and deaths caused by this dangerous drug.

The Philadelphia Medical Malpractice Lawyers at Feldman & Pinto also sue doctors who negligently cause patients’ Arava injuries. Physicians can be responsible for Arava injuries by neglecting to watch their patients for Arava side effects.
